Gin Label Design: When Overprintable Holographic Foil Becomes Part of the Color Story

A gin label can be many things — but the best ones do two things at once: they catch the eye, and they let people recognize the brand at a glance.

Unlike many spirits shaped by long-established visual codes, gin gives brands more freedom to define what they want to be — and build a visual language around it. At the same time, gin labels often rely on more than visual appeal. Paper, texture and finishing can play an important role in how the brand is experienced.

For this Medusa gin label, the design brings these elements together through tactile paper, holographic hot foil, overprinting and embossing.

01 — Start with the Label

The design started with a tactile, uncoated paper.

Rather than treating the label as a simple carrier for information, the design uses it as part of the product experience. The paper creates a tactile foundation — the kind of texture you notice before you even read the label — while the visual direction draws from the mysterious, fluid character of Medusa herself.

The challenge was then to introduce a finishing effect that could add light and movement without taking over the entire design.

02 — Designing with Overprintable Holographic Foil

Holographic hot foil was chosen for Medusa's face to bring another dimension to the label.

As the viewing angle changes, the holographic surface creates shifting reflections and movement, giving the central image a constantly changing character.

But the real opportunity came from choosing an overprintable holographic foil.

Instead of treating the holographic effect as the final visual effect, its overprintability allowed us to use print to further shape how the foil would look.

The next question was: how could color become part of the effect?

03 — When Print Shapes the Holographic Effect

The answer was to print a graduated blue directly over the holographic foil.

Because the foil is overprintable, the printed blue interacts with the reflective surface underneath, changing how the holographic effect is perceived across the image.

The result felt more layered and atmospheric — somewhere between sea glass and moonlight.

The holographic effect is still there, but it is no longer perceived as a purely reflective effect. The printed color becomes part of how the light, movement and depth are experienced.

This is what makes overprintable holographic foil interesting for designers: color can be used to shape the character of the holographic effect itself.

04 — Building the Effect

This approach creates a visual relationship between overprintable holographic foil and print.

The holographic hot foil provides the reflective and shifting base. The graduated blue then shapes how that effect appears across the design.

The final appearance is therefore not determined by the foil alone. Because the foil can be overprinted, printing becomes another tool for shaping its color and visual character.

05 — From Shine to Atmosphere

The goal was never simply to make the label more reflective.

By printing blue over the overprintable holographic foil, the effect becomes more closely connected to the overall visual language of the design. The foil brings light and movement; the printed color gives that light a different character.

This is where overprintable holographic foil becomes interesting for designers.

The same foil can look completely different depending on how it's printed.

For brands, this creates another way to build a distinctive visual identity — with material, color and finishing working together rather than as separate elements.

06 — Details Around Medusa

The holographic face is the main visual focus, while other finishing details support the composition.

Fine silver linework around Medusa's face traces a sailboat and a mermaid, with blue waves connecting the elements.

Below her, MEDUSA combines blue hot stamping with embossing, adding raised texture and tactile contrast without competing with the holographic-and-print effect above.

Together, the different techniques create a clear hierarchy: holographic foil brings movement, printing shapes its color and character, while embossing and fine details add tactility.

07 — The Design Takeaway

With overprintable holographic foil, color becomes part of the effect — one foil, endless character.

For a category where brands have the freedom to define their own visual language, finishing does not have to be an afterthought. Material, color, light and texture can all become part of the same design decision.

This case shows one way to move beyond holographic foil as a purely reflective effect — and use it to make a label that's not just eye-catching, but unmistakably its own.
